Ceramics: Introduction to Clay

Audience: Beginner

Michael Saul will teach this course which is designed to build basic skills and understanding of ceramics forming techniques. Students will learn hand building skills such as pinch-forming and coil construction, as well as slab forms. The clay forms will range from functional to sculptural. Surface decoration and glaze skills will also be explored. Basic throwing techniques on the potter's wheel such as centering, opening and pulling up cylinders, bowls, cups and vessels will be covered. The students will work with stoneware clay and work will be fired in an oxidation kiln or wood kiln.

Tuition will cover glaze materials and kiln firing; however, students should anticipate additional fees for clay and some tools.
